Police arrests MP

Minister of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening and Member of Parliament for Baegu Asifola constituency David Tome has been arrested and charged today.
The Commissioner of Police today confirmed the arrest of Tome was for alleged offences relating to constituency funds.
The MP allegedly misappropriated constituency funds totalling over $67,000. It is alleged that in 2011, the MP obtained public funds for a constituency project, however those funds were allegedly not used as intended but were allegedly converted for his own use.
The MP is charged with fourteen (14) counts of Conversion under Section 278(1)(c)(i) of the Penal Code, involving funds totalling $67,170.
The brief of evidence was compiled by RSIPF investigators and reviewed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which recommended that the charges be laid. The MP was arrested at Rove Police Headquarters by the RSIPF Corruption Investigation Team earlier today.
The Commissioner of the RSIPF, Mr Matthew Varley acknowledges the professionalism of the RSIPF Corruption Investigation Team within the National Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), who investigated this complex matter over a long period of time.
The MP appeared in court today.
