Longline vessel detained, breached license condition


A foreign locally based-registered longline fishing vessel has been detained and currently under full scale investigation for alleged breach of its license condition.

This was made possible through a Regional Surveillance Operation (code named Rai Balang) co-ordinated by Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) last week.

Solomon Islands has participated in the operation where they successfully apprehended the vessel for further investigation into a suspected breach of one of its license conditions.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) in a release says the longliner was apprehended by the patrol boat Auki in the Solomons EEZ and escorted back to Honiara for further investigations by compliance officers from the Ministry (MFMR).

“A fisheries officer who was part of the joint-operations boarded the vessel and discovered that there was a suspicion that an offence been committed.

“The vessel was found to be in possession of wire traces, which is not allowed on Longline vessels at the moment (as license condition).”

Investigation is currently underway.
